Statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on the First Anniversary of the Assassination of Martyr Ismail Haniyeh by the Zionist Regime
One year has passed since the martyrdom of the steadfast fighter Sheikh IsmailHaniyeh the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas and one of the prominent leaders of jihad and resistance against the Zionist occupiers.
The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran honors the memory of the great martyr and longtime companion of Martyr Haj Qassem Soleimani, and extends its congratulations and condolences to the Supreme Leader, the resilient Palestinian nation, the family of Martyr Haniyeh, the Hamas movement, all resistance groups in Palestine and the entire region, and all freedom-seekers around the world. It emphasizes that the path of Martyr Haniyeh and other martyrs of the resistance will continue with strength until the oppressed people of Palestine are liberated from the yoke of occupation and their right to self-determination is fulfilled.
The assassination of Martyr Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, while he was an official guest at the inauguration ceremony of President Pezeshkian, was a heinous crime and a blatant violation of international legal principles, national sovereignty, and the territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, reaffirming the legitimacy of the Palestinian people’s struggle to realize their right to self-determination against the occupation and apartheid imposed on their historic homeland, considers the targeted killing of Palestinian elites and leaders as part of the occupying regime’s sinister plan to ethnically cleanse the Palestinian people. The Islamic Republic stresses the urgent need to end the impunity of perpetrators and to bring them to justice.
One year after the Zionist regime’s crime in assassinating Sheikh Ismail Haniyeh, the terrorist and criminal nature of this regime has become clearer than ever. The continued comprehensive military and political support from the United States and certain other Western countries has made them accomplices and partners in the regime’s crimes, and they bear international responsibility for the Zionist regime’s acts of genocide and war crimes.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, while reaffirming its determination to resolutely exercise its inherent right of self-defense against the aggressions of the Zionist regime, reminds all governments of their responsibility to confront serious violations of humanitarian law and to stop the ongoing genocide. The Islamic Republic also calls for practical and effective action to aid the oppressed people of Gaza and to prevent the continued mass killing of the Palestinian nation.
